Mayor Debbie Kling participated in a panel discussion at the West Coast’s Infrastructure Week Kick-Off event in Los Angeles, California on May 14.

Kling joined a panel of mayors to discuss the most pressing infrastructure challenges their cities face as well as their strategic goals to overcome local challenges. Kling’s panel participation topic was titled, “Mayor to Mayor Roundtable: The State of American Cities,” and included Mayor Jonathan Rothschild (Tucson, Arizona) and Mayor Andy Shore (Lansing, Michigan).

Infrastructure funding challenges are not unique to Nampa, and Kling shared, “Due to the lack of funding at both state and federal levels, local governments need to find creative solutions to solve aging infrastructure and growth challenges.”180514_InfrastructureWeek_137 (1) (web)

Kling mentioned a key takeaway from the event was our interdependency related to coastal ports, rails and trucking for exported and imported products. The event included a variety of other discussions as well as a tour of the underground regional connector currently under construction in Los Angeles, costing over $1 billion.

Infrastructure Week hosted East and West Coat kickoff events and includes smaller events through the nation during the week. The National Infrastructure Week is an opportunity to highlight the importance of infrastructure in our nation and concerns over lack of funding for aging infrastructure.

According to their website, “Infrastructure Week, a non-profit organization, convenes a national week of education and advocacy that brings together American businesses, workers, elected leaders, and everyday citizens around one message in 2018: Americans are waiting. The future won’t. It’s #TimeToBuild.” For more information visit, www.infrastructureweek.org.

Costs associated with Kling’s visit were covered by the hosting organization. Next week, the City of Nampa will be celebrating National Public Works Week, May 20-26, 2018.
